Show BUGLE CALL TO CELTS. ; Go After -Big Places in Business as Well as in Politics. Here, says the Republic of Boston, are -some facts and principles upon Which the men and women of Irish i blood in New Kngland ought to act: Boston is two hundred and seventy-five seventy-five years old tomorrow. Long before the Revolutionary days ihe Irish were largely represented here. In the war of the Revolution every battle told of their valor. The same is true of the war of 1S12 and the Mexican war. In the Civil uar whole Irish regiments regi-ments enlisted- In the Spanish-American Spanish-American war the Jrish easily led all other races joined together, including in-cluding those of native parentage, in the number ol men sent to the front. :" II is Irish brawn and muscle that contributed most in building the railroads; rail-roads; hewing the rock, extracting the ores from the ground, plowing the fields and contributing in every way to the up-building of New England. All of this speaks volumes for the former generation. What results are shown in the finer fields of activity? With more than :o ner cent of th population of Boston what have the Irish to show for the strength and volume of their race in the banks or in the field of nuance? In thirty-eight banks in Boston there is not one president, vice president, presi-dent, treasurer,, secretary, cashier or : assistant cashier, and only nine directors direct-ors out of 400. Uut of 12 trust companies whose lists are available there is only one president, presi-dent, two vice presidents, no cashier, no assistant cashier, no secretary, no treasurer, and only nine out of '.'10 directors, di-rectors, seven of whom are in one company. com-pany. Of clerks and minor officers employed em-ployed in all financial institutions, there are .but 63 out of J,0t9, or 6 per cent. Out of 2,L'0u lawyers in Boston there are 10 per cent. Irish. Out of 1.561 physicians in Boston' there are 16 per cent. Irish. .Out of 1,200 business men in Boston there are 7 per cent. Irish. Out of architects there are only 9 per cent. Irish. Out. of civil engineers there are only 3 per cent. Irish. On the staff of the city hospital today to-day there are about one hundred men. Not more tharf six or seven are of Irish blood. 1 v In the Exchange Club, where are gathered the business brains of Bos- ton as well as men in all walks of life, less than a dozen men of Irish blood are numbered among the members. mem-bers. There are hundreds of business institutions in-stitutions in Boston today where half a thousand men are employed, and you can count the Irish heads of these institutions on the fingers of one hand. They furnish the brains in many cases but do not control. The men and women of the Irish race are in the lead as far as the amount of wages earned is concerned. Recent statistics show that the Catholic Cath-olic wage-earners of Massachusetts, numbering 500,000 persons, earned 5300.-000,000 5300.-000,000 per year and the Irish comprise by far the largest number. In the city of Boston there are 111.-76s 111.-76s homes by the latest returns available, avail-able, and of these the Irish have 39,174 Nine thousand, nine hundred and six of these homes are owned unencumbered,; unencum-bered,; and of this total the Irish own 3,827. A larger number than the men of native stock, own. -Why not go after the big places in business -as well as in politics? If we . do this we help ourselves and the community com-munity as well. The Republic consecrates conse-crates itself to this object and ask3 the co-operation of everyone interested inter-ested in New England's future. ' - |
