Show .-; HATS OFF TO CUBAN HONESTY. ; In a, recent interview with President Palma of Cuba, that gentleman so well known in Central Valley, Val-ley, N. Y., made this proud boast: "When he took over the government from the American's there was $500,000 in the treasury. Now there is over $20,000,000 there. Fourteen millions are about to .be distributed to the ex-soldiers, and the interest on the $35,000,000 loan is to be paid in Advance. ' " "The administration of the country is honest. There is not a single venal functionary or cm-, ploye in " all the territory of the republic. Nobody steals a cent, and the -public realizes the absolute' honesty of all the secretaries." Hats. off to the official'modesty of this region of Latin-America! Anglo-Saxon thieves evidently -have, not yet educated the simple sons of this fruitful fruit-ful island in the innocent arithmetic of graft. If Palma and his -fellow Cubans would continue to; prosper and be hapy, let them keep the enterprising enterpris-ing fellows that call themselves - Americans out. " Else they won't long boast of a flush treasury and' that "nobody steals a cent." Union and Times. -f- -' - - |
