Show Diocese of Denver DENVER. Active Work of the Lenten Season in Colorado's Capital, (Correspondence Intermountain Catholic.) Rev. Faher O'Ryan opened a retreat for the girls at Loretto Heights on Wednesday. It will close on Saturday p-.orning. The promoters of the League of the Sacred Heart met in St. Leo's church last Sunday afternoon. They were addressed ad-dressed by their spiritual director. Father Casey. It is quite likelythat owing to the large number of articles left over from St Leo's fair, there will be a three davs' festival held in the basement of the church immediately after Easter. Rev. Father O'Ryan delivered the first lecture of his course last Sunday evening in St. Leo's church. The attendance at-tendance was marvellous, and many were turned away unable to gain admittance. ad-mittance. The lecture was a theological as well as an oratorical treat. The Lenten devotions at St. Leo's arc being verv well attended. On Wednesday Wednes-day evening the services consist in sermon, rosary and benediction. ! 1 1-davs: 1-davs: Evening, stations of the cross, rosarv and benediction. The morning masses are at 6:30 and 8 o clock. Instructions In-structions for the children of the parish par-ish arc given every afternoon at o'clock. It is expected that by the time the returns from St. Leo's recent tair have ben made, the amount will far exceed what was at first announced. There will soon be organized in St. Leo's parish a sodality for young men. The priests hope to make it the largest in the state. They have been wonderfully wonder-fully successful in establishing a young ladies' sodality. St Leo's have, during the past week, received many sets of handsome new vestments from France. Three elegant copes have also been added. New stations of the cross arc soon to be erected in St. Leo's church. Ihey will be the most beautiful in the city. Each is in itself a work of art. They , are six feet in height. j At high mass last Sunday morning Father Casev preached an excellent sermou on "The Necessity of Renam e. On Wednesday evening the subject ot his, discourse was "Mortal Sin." Father Euscbius. O. F. M.; conducted a three days' retreat for the pupils of St. Mary's academy last week. It closed on Sunday morning. Little Katie Smith was baptized in fU. Leo's church last Monday morning. Rev. Fathers O'Ryan and Casey hope to baptize a number of converts before Easter. They are at present instructing a great many. William Gleason, awell known Catholic Cath-olic young man, of 135!) South Thirteenth Thir-teenth street, died at St. Luke's hospital hos-pital from the effects of an operation last Monday night. Miss Helen Harrington of 1300 South Eleventh street, returned to this city on Friday vening after a three months' sojourn in Ireland. News has been-received in Denver that Mr. George Kempton, the talented pianist, formrly Of this city, is seriously serious-ly ill with typhoid-pneumonia. At the high mass in Logan avenue chapel last Saturday, Miss Letitia Kirkpatrick sang a beautiful "Ave Maria." Her clear and musical soprano so-prano voice received great praise. 3 A collection was taken up in Logan avenue chapel last Sunday to defray the expenses of seminarians who are now studying for this diocese. At the 11 o'clock mass in Logan ave-nu ave-nu chapel last Sunday Father White preached an impressive sermon, taking for his text "Dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return." The attendance at the Lenten serv ices in Logan avenue cnapet is very good. Florence Dunphy is rapidly recovering recover-ing from scarlet fever. A nephew of Mr. S. J. Dunleavy is at present in Waterford,- Ireland, studying for this diocese. Mr. Dennis Murts has entirely recovered recov-ered .from the effects of his fall in Logan avenue chapel. Mrs. Dr. Hughes has gone on a visit to California. Father Casey of Evanston, Wyo., was a visitorsat the cathedral rectory last week. The numerous newspaper reports about Bishop- Matz being recalled to Rome are in every respect untrue. Kentucky Irish-American, Louisville: Miss Nettie Hollenkamp, the talented young organist of St. Mary Magdalene's Magda-lene's church, will leave" shortly for Denver, accompanied by her mother. Her object is two-fold to visit her sister and to regain her health, which is impaired by overwork. Mrs. Fred Harig will take Miss Hollenkamp's position, po-sition, having been organist at this church as Miss May Doyle previous to her marriage with Mr. Harig. |
