He has achieved a distinct triumph and if he had done nothing mors than to have secured se-cured and translated into English the "dlarlo" or Journal of the Fr-'.ncisc.m explorers of Utah jmd the discoverers of Utah Lake he wou'd merit the acknowledgments and appreciation" of all students of western and southwestern history. But he has -accomplished very much more. He has given us the best and most satisfactory treatise on the Ute Indians and Pi-eed tribe that we have anywhere read. His delineation of the moiinlains and deserts of the '"Great Basin" is a masterpiece of descriptive writing and full of fascinating details. de-tails. While burrowing among old Spanish archives and manuscripts and delving into the literature of piencer times the author has dug up much valuable information, rectified and corrected some errors and mistakes which had crept into our local histories his-tories and, in doing this, he has placed the present generation and future historians under a deep obligation. obli-gation. His two chapters entitled "Heroism of French and Spanish Missionaries" and "The Franciscans," Fran-ciscans," make fascinating and edifying reading, so much so indeed, that we regret he did not enlarge upon his subjects. The friends of Bishop Seanlan over all Utah and Xevada will be delighted to learn that the scholarly historian, in his sketch of the life of the venerable prelate, ha recalled many charming charm-ing incidents of other days, and has recorded with generous enthusiasm his admiration for the missionary mis-sionary labors and privations which entered into the apostolic career of the pioneer priest and bishop. We do not hesitate to assure our readers that "The Catholic Church in Utah" ought, on its merits, to meet with a friendly greeting in every Catholic home of our intermountain states. The book will repay reading, furnishes a wealth of information on our early days, and, is of itself, a monument to the (industry, the erudition and command of language of the author.
