The Duke of Alba, one of the highest grandees of Spain, died from heart failure this at'- j ternoon at his apartments in the Holland Hol-land House. He came to this city on I Spt. 21 to witness the international races, as the guest of Sir Thomas Lip-ton. Lip-ton. On the day of the last race he j contracted a severe cold, which devel- j j opel into influenza. His condition im- I proved greatly during the past few j diiys, and up to within a few moments j of his death he was entertaining a par- i ty of friends. Shortly after the party had left the , diike complained to his valet of severe pains in the region of his heart. He was assisted to his couch and medical I aid hastily summoned, but before the i physicians had arrived the duke ex- ! pi red. j The Duke of Alba, or Alva, as it is sometimes spelled, was o'J years old. In social and tituiar rank he was the leader of Spanish society. He was fourteen times a count, nine times a grandee of the first-class, and twelve times a marquis. His estate was the j most extensive private property in Spain, and his palace at Madrid for many years has been the center of' so- cial gaiety. Much of his time has i . been spent, however, in London. He is i said to be the last of the Stuarts. The duke was well known in this ' country, where he has been a frequent . visitor. He was a spectator of the America's cup races in 1S93, and spent the season of 1SSJ4 at Newport. ' |
