Show RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE. The late Patrick O'Mullin. the well-I well-I known Halifax bank president who j died a few days ago, left a worthy example ex-ample for wealthy Catholics to follow. I He bequeathed $15,000 to the New Paul-I Paul-I ist fathers $15,000 to the New Tone Catholic Missionary society, known as i the Dominican Fathers, and $10,000 to the archb'shop of Halifax for the edu-catton edu-catton of young men for the priesthood. The rest of th estate, valued at about $500,000, is left to the Society of Jesus in Canada. Mr. O'Mullin was a bach- j elor. He put his money to good use. Here is an item which goes to show that the idea that a man cannot be faithful to his religion and advance in the world is a silly bogy: Mr. John A. McCall, president of the New York Life Insurance company, is a Catholic American, who. without fear or favor, has won his way to the high post of president of the New York Life Insurance In-surance company by reason of his probity, pro-bity, his industry, his good principle as well as his Intellectual capabilities. He is a distinguished pian- ist. and wa.s at one time a pupil of I Paderewski. The Polish Catholic union of the United States in convention at Syracuse, Syra-cuse, N. Y.. last week, passed resolutions resolu-tions denouncing the assassin of President Presi-dent McKinlap. repudiating the insinuation insinu-ation that the Polish people have any sympathy with Czolgosz or anarchists and asserting the patriotic love of the Poles. It was reported that the union had more than 11.000 members. Archbishop Arch-bishop Corrigan sent greetings. |
