Show "HOMEWARD" BOUND. Catholic Doctrine Adopted in England and the Masess No Longer Counted Count-ed Idolatrous. A correspondent sends to the Glasgow Observer some remarkable extracts from the Church Times, one of the best known and most influential Protestant church papers in Great Britain, which has among its contributors such Protestant Prot-estant church dignitaries as the Protestant Prot-estant archbishop of Canterbury and York and the Protestant bishops of London and Birmingham. In that paper some weeks ago appeared ap-peared an advertisement from the Prot estant parson of Stornoway, asking if any of its readers would subscribe for a sanctuary lamp to burn before the blessed sacrament in the most isolated parish in Britain, or who would give the stations of the cross to be put up in the church. The Church Times of April 3 last contained con-tained four advertisements in which the word "mass" occurs. I copy one, continues the correspondent, worded as follows, the others are similarly warded: "Priest Wanted in Northern Town. Six Points. Daily Mass. Apply." Ap-ply." The six points are six well known Catholic usages such as unleavened, bread, mixing vater with chalice lights, etc. Here is another sample: "Community "Commu-nity of St. Katherine's, Normand House, Normand Road, London. Retreat Re-treat will be given by Father Black on . Apply Rev. Mother." Last week the same paper has also four advertisements ad-vertisements for assistant ministers where daily mass is mentioned. Here is a specimen of an advertisement, typical typ-ical of most of the advertisements under un-der the heading "Clerical," appearing week after week in the same newspa-, per: "Priest Wanted. Catholic. Daily Eucharist. Apply ." Other two advertisements in the Church Times are worded thus: "St. Savior's Poplar, Seventh year's mind of Father Dolling. Friday, 14th May, 8 p. m. Vespers of the Dead and Sermon. Ser-mon. Saturday, 15th of May, 7 a. m. Sung mass of Requiem. Saturday, May 15th, seventh anniversary of the death of Father Dolling a Requiem will be sung at St. Cuthbert's, Earl's Court," etc. In the same paper I read "that the dedication anniversary" the 100th of the First Abbey Church by St. Wilfrid, Bishop of Tork, was held at Evesham in All Saints Church by a Missa cantata can-tata celebrated by the Vicar on 1st of May. On Sunday the Abbot of Caldcy preached three times in All Saints. At the afternoon service the mayor and corporation attended in state. The Abbey Ab-bey of Caldey gave a powerful address on 'Character.' There were crowded congregations at all the services. The Abbey of Caldey gave a beautiful address ad-dress on 'Perfection,' illustrating his remarks re-marks by reference to the Benedictine Order, now so happily revived in England." Eng-land." All this as Protestant advertising and Protestant church news is surely significant sig-nificant of something more. What is it? Will those people stop at their "mass" or go no further? We hope not. There shall be one fold and one shepherd. |
