Show LDS Church Issues Statement On Idaho Liquor Petitions We feel that it is not only our right, but our bounden duty, to call attention of the voters, 01 l-jaiiklin county to a matter of vital vi-tal importance to the welfare of all or us. Lnder our statute the people have the privilege of enacting enact-ing lawn when the legislature does not see fit to do so. On November Novem-ber r,ib when voters of Idaho receive re-ceive their ballots to vole for can didates, they will also receive a( separate ballot on which they may-vote may-vote lor the enactment of two new laws. One of these is known as the --County Liquor Control Act' which is designed to give each county the right to decide for itself it-self whether or not liquor shall be sold within its limits. The other is known as "The Idaho Sobriety Act" and is intended to stop certain cer-tain evil practices which have grown up in the state, such as sale of liquor and mixing of drinks in clubs, advertising of liquor, and improper methods in inducing the formation of the liquor habit. On the question of the use of liquor the Lord has spoken in these words; "Behold, verily, thus sailh the Lord unto you: in consequence of evils which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation. That Insmuch as any man drinK-eth drinK-eth wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good." You will be told that the state derives much .revenue from the sale of liquor hence it is good. Iu the first eight months of 1340 gross sales of hard liquor were $1, 90S, 000.00, of which the distil-!rs distil-!rs g,.t $l,37S,0i 10.00, profit J,620,-Obu.OO J,620,-Obu.OO of whi-Jh $22S, 025.06 went to operating cost 01 the liquor Lis-pr Lis-pr nsaries, saia.ries, e c, and there was finally paid imo the State Treasury the sum of $392,974.94 That $1,005,020.00 would have bought a lot of necessities for thi people of Idaho if circulated in le gitimate trade. We have not in eluded in our figures the los: through beer, nor have we addec the misery and degradation whicl liquor leaves in its wake and whicl cannot be estimated in money val ue.
