This newspaper doesn't take sides with any of the views expressed. express-ed. Contributions are welcome. The Clarion of. October 24 published pub-lished a long list of attainments claimed by the county superintendent superinten-dent of schools to justify his petition peti-tion for reelection. Most of these claims are abstract and difficult to verify, but paragraph para-graph ten of the list claims, quote, "Personal expense of county superintendent super-intendent decreased twelve per cent." This claim of 12 per cent saving in office expenditures Is a matter easily checked from the records accessible in the County Recorder's office. So that the public pub-lic may know, I herewith give totals to-tals of expenditures of the county superintendent's office for six consecutive con-secutive years, 1934 to 1939 in-$109.17, in-$109.17, $510.37, $515.17, $494.05, $720,54. Of these expenditures the encumbent en-cumbent superintendent has only one year in which all expenditures are yet icomplete and that is the $720.54 above mentioned, for 1939. This expenditure is $205 above the high year of the previous five years or $253 above the average of the five years. Calculations from these figures show that instead of a savings of twelve per cent as claimed in paragraph par-agraph ten, there is an actual increase in-crease in office expenditure of 54 per cent. This does not mean a lot of money, mon-ey, only $253, but it does represent a policy of dirty politics which is fast undermining the confidence of the public in its representations. Now if the other accomplishments accomplish-ments claimed in the article are proportiantely accurate, the public should give the democratic aspirant aspir-ant for county superintendent its undivided support. Respectfully, JOHN A. MORRISON. |
