Show strive with diligence in the coming election and in all elections to keep the men in office who are succeeding so eminently as our civic servants Let us avail ourselves of the good chance that is ours right-now to keep William Worley and A. W. Chambers in their present offices as County Commissioners; and let this apply to all other eood men and women holding office, regardless even, of politi- j ca.1 Iffiliation W. W. HENDERSON. THIS ARTICLE PAID FOR BY MR. HENDERSON difficult to find a case in which the people themselves, in any local government have ever turned a good man out of office for the single reason that he had already held the office two terms. Look, for instance, at the case of Mayor A.. Gl Lundstrom of Logan. Everyone knows and appreciates the great victory which Mayor Lundstrom has won for Logan and the people of Utah. When he came up for a third and for still more terms, this "two term tradition" was brandished before the people, but without apparent effect. A. G. Lundstrom has been elected mayor of Logan six consecutive terms and at the last election received more votes than at any previous election. The people simply will not put men out of local office when they are known to be efficient, simply because they have been in two terms. Neither would George Washington. Why not look at the matter in a practical way? Would anyone turn a good school superintendent or a good school teacher out of office simply because they had been in office two "terms?" Would a church turn an officer or a worker out of office because he had served two "terms?" Would banks dismiss their trusted efiicient employees, factories discharge their successful managers, stornf terminate the employment of their skilled clerks, or farmers get rid of their efficient hired hands for no other reason than that they had already held their jobs two terms? Utter nonsense! Those who employ others to do their work for,4.hem will never come to such moronic stupidity. It is either ignorant or sacreligious, or it may be childish innocence to charge George Washington so . rediculously. Then why should we, the very people who employ superintendents, teachers, bankers, managers, terminate the offices of our civic employees em-ployees because they have been in office "two terms." This no doubt, is the very reason why we shouldmpioy these experienced and skillful employees still more terms. It is hoped that no offense or no exception will be taken to mention men-tion of one or two outstanding cases in our county government which illustrate the "term idea" we are attempting to expound By making mention of these cases, let it be understood that we "say or imply nothing against their opponents. William Worley of Logan and A. W. Chambers of Smithfield have served Cache County as commissioners for two terms, and have been persuaded by many of their friends to become candidates for a third term. These two men have lived among us for many years, have succeeded suc-ceeded in their private affairs, have been outstanding leaders in many community enterprises and were personally and favorably known to many thousands in the county before they ever, became County Commissioners, Com-missioners, Now, after having served us two terms, they are favorably favor-ably known to many more people and there seems to be unanimous opinion that they'ar men of unquestioned honesty, wide" experience, and surpassing wisdom. They have demonstrated by their official actions and by actual record of their achievements that they are distinguished dis-tinguished friends of the farmer, the laboring man, the aged and the dependent. They have taken a vigorous hold of every opportunity to advance every movement for public welfare. They have taken advantage ad-vantage of every possible federal grant to bring relief to our people in distressnig times. They have been found as approachable and sympathetic as a man's best friend and have listened with patience and interest to every proposition brought before them for consideration. consider-ation. That is a record of procedure which they can be proud of and which all citizens delight in. But that is not all. They have given us Ih-e best and most extensive system of roads in the County we have ! ever had. They have adjusted and settled an enormous number of) tax delinquencies without loss to the County and without foreclosures to speak of, and without turning farmers off th lands and people out 1 of their homes through the distressing years of the great depression. The most astounding thing is: they have reduced and made a more equitable distribution of the tax burden, have proceeded absolutely without any financial borrowing and have so reduced the County debt that within three years Sine we can be totally free from financial obligations. The whole county government, under the skillful leadership leader-ship of these commissioners runs smoothly, economically and efficiently. If these men are willing to go on another term and manage our County as they have been doing, it would surely be a senseless, extravagant ex-travagant move on our part to turn them out. It is a grave and costly error to think that our civic officers do not require skill and that nearly anybody can do the work required. If we could only know, in exact figures",' the. awful losses we must sustain by turning competent civic officers out and replacing them by new ones who have to earn and gain experience to do their new jobs, we would no doubt think a great deal more seriously about" it, and before be-fore making changes. With all due respect to everybody concerned and with special appreciation for new candidates seeking to replace old ones, let us ARE TWO TERMS ENOVGH? Every now and then someone, or some organization, perhaps with good intentions and honest convictions, comes out with a declaration that there exists an American Amer-ican tradition to the effect that no one should hold a civic or political office for more than two terms. The basis for this so-called tradition rests, almost without exception, on the single case of our first president who served the country as chief executive for two terms and when requested to consider a third term, declined on several grounds, or for several reasons one of which was, that two terms were enough. If one will carefully weigh all the circumstances connected con-nected with the Washington declaration he can reach only one reasonable conclusion and that is, that the father of our country meant this two term statement for himself alone, or at most for no' other office in the country than that of President of the United States. It is unjustifiable and unreasonable for anyone to seize upon this singular, narrowly applied statement of Washington's and make it appear that he had in mind all the little units of government reaching out into every little geographical unit and spaced through all the country's history. To attempt to make Washington's Washing-ton's answer apply to precinct and county government and through all changing time and conditions is highly unwarranted, most unjust and most . unkind to our great national hero. Apparently, the only time that anyone ever tries to work this so-called "tradition"' is when somebody wants an office which somebody else has already held for two terms. It may be that this is the only time one thinks about it. It would be very |
