R Palmer There Theo was recently organized in South Southern rn Utah what will be known as the Western Division of the Canyon Club a national organization headed by y Mr Mathew Hale of Washington D. D C C. C This scenic association had its inception in the hearts of a group of Eastern astern travelers assembled in the Explorers Explorers' Club New York who had visited the Canyons of Southern Utah and nd Northern Arizona and had experienced ex ex- the enchantments of this wonderous land The moving spirit in the assembly was as Mr Hale who had visited and revisited re re- visited for th the p past st two s summers summers every very canyon and advertised point of f interest in this land of color and form orm and had sought out in his sojourn sourn so so- journ urn of many weeks a goodly number of f points of equal interest and grand grand- ear eur ur which as yet have been ed d because of their to the he the average tourist The Canyon Club has not been or or- to sell Southern Utah to the tourist It has no commercial interest in in- terest erest or connection whatever and will willet set et itself against any commercializing of f these great masterpieces of nature It t seeks only to bring brine together in fraternal and kindred association those hose whose souls have been moved in n common by the sights of any of these hese wonderous canyons and to make safe afe pleasant and profitable the journeys of those who desire to see them hem Its mission is to collect and authentic information as aso asto asto to o the geology and scientific features of if the parks division to collect pre pre- serve erve and make available to the visitor visitor vistor vis- vis tor the history and story of the sturdy turdy people who pioneered the country to promote the development and improvement of roads trails camps and hotels to preserve from mutilation and desecration of natures nature's great reat art sanctuaries sanctuaries-in in short to do anything and everything it can to develop develop de- de and arid preserve to the people of the he the United States one of their greatest great great- greatest est and ana grandest play grounds and to promote the pleasures and benefits of those hose who visit them Mr Hale who by the way has been an intimate friend and associate of Roosevelt Taft Wilson Harding and Coolidge and who facetiously claims the he distinction of having elevated to the Presidency by allowing allow allow- ing ng the President to defeat him in inthe inthe inthe the gubernatorial race which made Coolidge a national figure was was' deep deep- ly y impressed with every aspect of the he country and its people but he found everywhere a lack of reliable Information to the travel travel- traveler er abo about t the things he wanted most mosto to o know This search for the things he wanted to know prompted the organization organization organization or- or or or- of a Club to collect and supply the desired information To accomplish the purposes of the Club a Western division with headquarters head quarters at the gateway of the Parks was wasa a necessity Accordingly Mr Hale Bale ale recently visited Utah and affected af- af affected af the following organization Pres Anthony W.
