Show ROAD ROADWORK WORK PROGRESSING 00 The roadwork up the canyon canyons canyon's is goIng gong go go- lag Ing ng rapidly forward From the Gypsum Gypsum Gyp- Gyp sum urn mine to the head of Ashdown Gulch men are at work straightening out ut the sharp curves knocking off the points and widening out the narrow places With at Us his disposal Preston reston Lindford highway engineer of f the Bureau of Public Roads is beginning be be- ginning Inning the job of making the road up p Cedar Canyon fool proof We say Beginning because with only a beginning can be made of this lis will be expended between Woods Wood's ranch anch in the canyon and the rocky rockypoint rockypoint point just past the Gypsum mine the remaining between the head of f the canyon and Midway With this amount only the sharp points mints and the dangerous narrows can canic be ic improved nA care has haa been een taken to distribute the money where it will do the most good Six sub contracts have been let in the canyon anyon each contractor working under under uner un- un der er the supervision of Mr Lindford The most important of the improvements im- im provement is la the wid and straightening of the road at the head of f Ashdown Gulch where the sharp turn urn is fa made to cross crollS the Here a large steel culvert seventy feet I long ong will be laid its ita upper end being some ome thirty feet high on the lower side Ide twenty feet wide on top and eleven leven feet high on the upper tipper side The material will be taken from the point above which will Ve be blasted down own to a point ten feet below the present road bed above abon the bridge This his will make the present I curve urve a straight road twenty feet wide widen on n the culvert with ample roo room to turn urn around just across It it This same plan is being followed on all the bad curves The points will be removed d dand and the dirt filled into the narrows on either side At the mouth of the Gulch and again a half hall or three quarters of a amile amile mile below the channel of the creek will be changed to the other side of the he canyon and at the mouth of the gulch cribbing will be put in and filled filled filled fill fill- ed with the material taken from Me channel making it possible to double and even triple the width of the road at these places and in Sn each case the cut will be made from seven to twelve feet below the present road bed Th These se two are ant pieces of construction Each cut and curve when finished will wiil be such that the driver of a car carcan carcan carcan can see at least one hundred and fifty feet ahead of him all the time where now he can see in some places less than fifty feet There will win also be some surfacing done on spots where the road is rough or cut up The main feature of the Midway portion of the work will win be the openIng openIng opening open open- ing of the cut off which was because of a few years ago This will be opened and widened widen widen- ed and the sandy stretch surfaced A number of the dangerous curves around the mountain to Midway will willbe willbe be removed and the road cut down to toa a more m grade on en these points Nothing will be done to improve tb the grades up the gulch says Mr Lindford Lindford Lind Lind- ford although it is possible to reduce the road to a of 8 per cent grades This can be done by moving the bridge at the mouth up the left lefthand lefthand lefthand hand canyon a short distance to where the cliff cUff comes down to the creek bottom thus bringing the road around into the gulch just under the ledge This would make a twenty five fhe foot fill under the first hanging rock and a seven foot fill under the second There would be in this distance distance dis dis- dis- dis tance twenty four hundred feet of 8 per cent grade and the remainder on an average of 6 per cent Above the hanging rocks the grade would cut below the present road for a distance coming back to it a few hundred feet below the bridge in the gulch Another Another Another An An- other cut of practically the same nature nature nature na na- na- na ture could be made between behnen the bridge and the head of the gulch Mr Ir Linford has been studying this J project and he says it is possible to take nake the improvement but that is not the business of the present construction construction con con- r work |
