Show KEEP TO THE LEFT! Custom has ordained that the pedestrian pe-destrian on the rural highway, Like the vehicles, shall "Keep to the Right." This is proper for the vehicle, but for the pedestrian the right side is the wrong side, according to Maxwell Max-well N. Halsey, Traffic Engineer of the National Bureau of Casualty and Surety Underwriters. Two thousand persons are killed annually in the United States and many thousands injured because they cling to the ancient custom. They are struck at curves, over the crest of hills and in narrow passes by automobiles auto-mobiles coming from- behind. Dusk, bt-fore the headlight is turned on, is very dangerous, but later in the night, when the silhouette of the pedestrian Mends into the background even un-dor un-dor the strongest of headlights, is the most dangerous time of all. ' . ''Until the states provide sidewalks for the country road, the pedestrian should always keep on the left side," Mr. Halsey declares; "Then at least he can see the cars coming and move to safety if the occasion demands it. It may feel awkward at first, but it will pay. . " "There are signs of an awakening in this matter. North Carolina, West Virginia, Kansas, Delaware, Massachusetts, Massa-chusetts, New York, and New Jersey have laws which authorize the proper authorities to build sidewalks along highways. In other states, county authorities au-thorities have been authorized to undertake un-dertake similar construction." Remember, when walking on a country road, that the left side is the right side.' |
