Show BEET INDUSTRY ENDANGERED. Should the beet sugar industry of j the United States be wiped out by the new low tariff policy? Represen-j tative Frank C. Kniffin, of Ohio, a. Democrat, does not think it should. He says: "It has been charged in certain cer-tain quarters that our domestic beet sugar industry is expensive and inefficient. in-efficient. Presumably, this charge is; made on the theory that the cost of j producing sugar from sugar beets, j grown and processed in the United States, is greater than the cost of. producing sugar from sugar cane i grown by peon labor in foreign coun-tries. coun-tries. I concede tha'., because of the J standards of living in the United j States, American farmers and Ameri- j can labor cannot produce sugar as cheaply as in countries where peons labor from dawn until dark, under a foreign flag and under conditions ' that approach slavery. On the other I hand, I do not subscribe to the theory ! that because sugar can be produced , cheaper in a foreign country our do- mestic industry is expensive and in-, in-, efficient." |
