Show Thousands of Beef Cattle Being Bought A total of 817,605 beef cattle have been bought up to date on the parched parch-ed ranges of the 15 western states and turned over to the Federal Surplus Sur-plus Relief corporation to be canned and distributed to needy families, it was announced by the Agricultural Adjustment administration through William Peterson, state director of drouth relief service. Total payments to farmers to date are $2,087,695 on 16,610 contracts. The total number of cattle soldin Utah for the first week of July is 1149. None of the cattle so purchased and processed are to be sold, but all are being used for the help of needy families fam-ilies on relief lists throughout the country, and will not find their way i to market. Hides from these animals go to the processor or packer in part I payment of processing charges. "How many cattle we may eventually even-tually buy, and how long buying will i be kept up, we cannot say now," Mr. i Peterson said. "It depends on condi-j condi-j ttons as they develop, including the inclination of the individual farmer to sell." There is no "goal" or "quota" in cattle purchases. Relief is planned for the hard-pressed drouth areas and buying and processing for relief purposes pur-poses is expected to continue only as long as the situation warrants. |
