Show Rain, Snow Storms Sweep Over Valleys Coming more than a month later than is usual with the fall and winter win-ter storms, and bringing with it a gladness and smiles from the farmer, stockman and the citizens in general, the wintry blasts started on Thanks--giving day with a thorough soaking storm which covered practically the entire southern section. A snowstorm, which was preceded by a good rain, broke over the valley last Thursday and continued most of the day. While the ground was hard and dry and little lit-tle of the moisture found great depth, the storm was highly beneficial and gave encouragement to those who look for rains for irrigation purposes. On the deserts and in the pastures where stock are being fed, the storm proved of unusual value. Vegetation and grasses were brought from the bleached and dry stage to a point where stock could browse with better results. Generally, the storms swept the deserts and flockmasters who had moved their sheep to winter quarters were in great glee. Monday the second storm visited the valleys of Southern Utah, adding greatly to the moisture situation. The mountains both east and west were capped with snow, and conservative estimates were that in some places more than two feet had fallen at the higher points. Throughout the valley it was thought about three inches of snow felL The weather conditions were mild, and the snow melted almost al-most as fast as it fell, and most of j the water went into the ground. In northern and eastern Utah, ac-; cording to reports, some of the main highways were clogged and travel was held up until crews were called to j clear the roads. Salina canyon, though in the line of the storm with a heavy fall, has been kept open and at no time during the storm was it impossible impos-sible to make the trip with safety. |
