Lake City: j October 28th will be observed ' throughout the United States as "Na-1 "Na-1 vy Day," in commemoration of the f birth of former president Theodore I Roosevelt and the birth of our modern mo-dern navy. I ! Since the dawn of recorded history adventurous men have sailed the oceans, reaching out as time passed and navigation and ships developed; men of the seas transformed the unknown un-known into the known. The annals of exploration, colonization, commerce 'and civilzation are overwhelmingly a history of those who "go down to the sea in ships and occupy their business in the great waters." In the record of achievement, the navies of the World have had a large share. In our own history, the United States navy has had a real part in its development, develop-ment, whether in war or in peace. It is an acknowledged fact that the navy's errands of mercy have saved more lives than its guns have ever destroyed. This has been accomplished accomplish-ed by the rushing of medical attention, atten-tion, provisions and supplies to stricken areas of floods, famine, fires and earthquakes.
