Show AMAZING CAR ECONOMY. If the dream of some of the coun-j try's leading metallurgists comes' tme and the price of aluminum j through a much greater output is: brought down materially in price, it: is likely to completely revolutionize' engineering practice. It has beem pointed out that in the automobile in-' dustry alone the use of cast alum-' inum for cylinder blocks would cut So to 40 per cent from the weight of the engine, thus contributing mater- ( ially to the performance of the car as well as to its economy. The possibilities of aluminum cyl-l inder block castings as well as its use for a multitude of other pur- poses, both in the automobile field' and in other industries, are seen in the employment of a Bohnalite cylinder cylin-der block for the first successful Dei-sel Dei-sel passenger car engine. This engine, an American design known as the Cummins, placed in a stock passenger ear, recently traveled travel-ed from coast to coast at a fuel cost! of a little over $7. It has shown on tests, throughout the country that it I traveled for about one-seventh th$ cost of a similar gasoline-powe;ctj unit.. This engine employs BohrvaliteJ aluminum alloy for the cylinder-' blocks, cylinder head, crankcae ami' other important units. A similar employment of aluminum alumin-um in gasoline engines would likewise like-wise increase their efficiency bnd economy, sngineers declare. |
