Show BARRIERS TO j MINING. i On September 23, the American Mining congress metal mines d'vision met in Chicago. Two most important matters for discussion were those old questions of mine taxation and labor i legislation. j Nothing can do more to hold mining min-ing back than Onerous, mistaken and misguided tax and labor policies on the part of the states and the federal government. Even in the prosperous days, .mining was continually in hot water over taxation. Legislation was often proposed and sometimes passed, that practically took the profit out, of mining operations. In these days, with the price of the base metals at extremely low levels, unfair taxation and legislation tending tend-ing to create labor disturbances could rob mining of whatever chance it has to win recovery. |
