Show Beet Growers Gel In Line for Action W. Harvey Ross, president onl general manager for the Gunnison Sugar company, spent last week in the district, where he was conferring with his superintendent, agriculturist, and others, Concerning the coming beet sugar campaign. Mr. Ross was highly gratified with the coming conditions con-ditions and predicted that this year would see one of the largest campaigns cam-paigns ever experienced by the company. com-pany. The fact that the beet growers grow-ers are responding quickly to the signing of the contracts for 1931, w:is an evidence that the acreage would be materially increased over previous 'years. During the first week more than 3,000 acres were signed, and every indication shows that the go:'.l set, 7,000 acres, or even more, would be turned into beet growing. The ?6.50 per ton offered by the Gunnison Sugar company, Manag.-r Ross stated, tops all offers made ,y other companies in Utah. We are making this for the sole reason of getting tonnage. Economic conditions, however, must be considered by th- company. In making the $6.50 offer it will be necessary to curtail in many of the branches and it will be necessary neces-sary . to seek cooperation from the growers. Curtailment of costs in seeking our acreage can greatly be helped by the ' cooperation of the growers, and wide-awake planters should know just what they can safely safe-ly plant, then seek thefieldmen and save many trips' to the Ironies, of the growers. " - The fields in the district for tho Gunnison Sugar company present n lively scene at the present. Fertilizer is being hauled and distributed and many of the growers are. plowing and preparing their patches fev early planting. Preparation of lands to be planted to beets and above all early planting has, by pa.st experience, given the. best results and brings an increased tonnage. During the early season, and when the winter moistures ara yet in the ground, the beets get a good start and are able, through thn sturdy start, to better combat thn lack of -wnter, should that conditio'! arise. |
