Show Centerfield Boy Loses Life In Auto Accident at Bryce Lynn Buchanan Instantly Killed When Neck Is Broken Companion Also InjuredBuchanan In-juredBuchanan Funeral Today. Lynn Buchanan, the 16-year-old son j of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Buchanan, of j Centerfield, was instantly killed, and his companion, Elmer James, of Salt ! Lake was knocked unconscious, in an automobile accident at Bryce canyon Sunday night at seven thirty. Lynn Buchanan sustained a broken neck, the ; base of his skull was crushed and his ! face was horribly cut and bruised j James sustained cuts and bruises j about the head and body and his back j was badly sprained. News of the tragedy in the death f of Lynn Buchanan was received here a few hours after it happened and the ! mother and brothers and sisters, as ! well as the many friends of the un-' fortunate boy, were deeply shocked and grieved. As soon as the arrangements arrange-ments could be made, Mr. Buchanan, the father, who was at Bryce with his son, took the "body to Richfield , where it was prepared for burial. 1 The accident, as near as could be , learned, happened just a short distance from Ruby's Inn, a resort at the can-: yon. Lynn, it was stated, had just . finished writing some letters, and he . and James got into a Maxwell car and j left for the postoffice to mail the let-1 ters. The James boy was driving the j car and it is said that when a short : distance from their destination, cat-; tie moved on the highway, thus caus-; ing confusion with the driver. Before the car could be stopped, it collided with two of the cattle, and as a re-! suit the automobile was turned over, ; lighting upside down. Buchanan was ; caught beneath the car and held fast. ' James was thrown clear of the wreck and knocked senseless. At the point of the accident there is a moderate grade and it is thought the boys were j coasting, as the engine was not run- j ning when relief reached the spot. ' The highway, too, at this point, had i been recently graveled, and it is presumed pre-sumed that this condition added to the peril of averting the collision. Lawrence Rose, driver of the Bryce canyon mail truck, was the first to discover the accident. He sounded the warning and soon rescuers were on the ground and the car lifted from the prostrate form of the Buchanan boy. ' Lynn's head had been caunght beneath be-neath the front end of the car and at the coroners inquest held before ."io body was taken away, that death wa-s instantaneous. The coroner's jury, called by the sheriff, rendered 5 verdict ver-dict that death was accidental. Following the rescuing of the dead youth and the verdict of the coroner's jury the grief stricken father, accompanied accom-panied by Ruby Syrett, proprietor of Ruby's Inn, took the body of Lynn to Richfield. James was taken to Panguitch Pan-guitch for first aid treatment, end later he was sent to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Parley G. James at Salt Lake City. While. James suffered many bad briuses and was rendered unconscious, and his condition con-dition reported serious, it is believed that he will recover. Both Lynn and Elmer were em?ilov-ed em?ilov-ed with the Lynch-Canyon Construction Construc-tion company, and were engaged in building cabins at Bryce canyon. Lynn devoted much of his time, too, in p;d-ing p;d-ing his father in carpenter work. The two boys were staunch friends and were inseparable and after work:ng hours were together most of the t' e.e. Lynn left for the park some three weeks ago. Lynn Buchanan was a native of Sanpete San-pete county and ws born at Meuti Jaunary 16, 1912. He went to Centerfield Cen-terfield when ten years of age. He completed his work in the grade schools and had entered the Gunnison Valley high school, completing the first year's work. K thnn decided to devote his time in learning a trad'! and chose that of carpenter. He proved adept at his Chosen profession and he was making splendid headway, be'ng efficient in all departments. Through his kindlv and srlnd!d personality, per-sonality, Lynn made hosts of warm friends, and during his association with the Boy Scouts of America, he was active and a leader. Surviving the unfortunate boy are the father a.nd mother, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Buchanan, one brother, Niel, and six sisters, Mrs. T. M. Sorenson, Verl, Alta, Delia, Madge and Gwo'ina. Funeral and burial services will hi held this, Thursday afternoon, from the Centerfield ward moet'ng house. Services will start at the chapel at two thirty and after the ceremor-ies ' the body will be taken to the Co r tor-field tor-field cemetery for interment. |
