Show lion Club Members Favor Sugar Tariff Members of the Gunnison Lions club, realizing that the important industry in-dustry of Gunnison Valley the sugar beet industry would be and is imperilled imper-illed with a lower tarrif on sugar, and asking that higher tariff be imposed on sugar importations, took a firm stand on the matter at the January 10 meeting. Every member present was stoutly in favor of the increased duty of three cents, and by this, it is hoped bo curtail the sugar coming in from foreign countries and crippling the beet sugar industry, which already has been injured by the cheap competition. com-petition. To the end of expressing to congress cong-ress the sentiment here, a resolution was prepared and copies forwarded to Senators Smoot and King and to Congressmen Don B. Colton and E. O. Leatherwood, at Washington. The resolution prepared by the local lo-cal committee is as follows: "Realizing the importance of the sugar beet industry, particularly as it applies to the Intermountain West, and realizing the deplorable condition now existing in this industry, due to the inadequate returns to farmers depending de-pending upon the sugar beet crop, and believing that this unsatisfactory and depressed condition is due, largely, to the lack of an adequate protective tariff tar-iff on imported sugar, and believing further that the enactment of legislation legisla-tion increasing the present tariff on 5ugar importation will greatly relieve the present condition of this industry; "Be it therefore resolved by the Gunnison Lions club, of Gunnison, Sanpete county, Utah, that we favor the enactment of such legislation as will provide for an increased tariff on importation of sugar into the United States, and the enactment of such oth-ir oth-ir legislation as will protect the su-'jar su-'jar beet industry. "And be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the United States Senators and Representatives from Utah, with the request that they use their efforts for ""he enactment of legislation to protect the sugar beet industry." |
