Show CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. It Is Decided to Organize one In Brlgham City. In pursuance to the call in last Saturday's Buglek, about twenty business men ofBrigham City met in the Court House Wednesday evening, to talk over the advisability advisa-bility of organizing a Board of Trade, or a Chamber ot Commerce. E. A. Box was elected Chairman; J. R. Smurthwaite, Secretary. ' The Chairman stated the object of the meeting. Speeches highly in favor of forming form-ing a Board of Trade, or Chamber of Commerce were given by A. IT. Snow, Wm. Horslny, V. A. Wade, J. R. Smurthwaite and E. A. Box. It was then moved and seconded that the Chairman appoint two committees: one on rules and regulations regu-lations and the other on member- .liir. Umr u.oro nraminUl IS fill- lows: RULES AND REGULATIONS: A. II. Snow, M. L. Snow and J. R. Smurthwaite. membership: W. A. Wade, Wm. Horsley, J. B. McMaster and L. T. Peirce". The meeting was adjourned to convene again in one week, Wednesday, Wed-nesday, April 20th, at the same hour and place, when the committee commit-tee are expected to report. The purport of the speeches delivered de-livered by the foregoing named , gentlemen is as follows: The proposed Chamber of Commerce Com-merce is not an organization gotten up to benefit the merchants and business men only ; it is for the, whole town and the people; what j benefits them will naturally benefit I the business men. It is purely a town organization; not, as some1 may suppose, a self aggrandizing1 affair. The weight of a Chamber of Commerce Com-merce is felt in ridding a town of grievances; such as railroad freight and passenger discriminations; or public nuisances, evils or burdens bur-dens of any nature whatever. By its aid, a uniformity in prices can be kept up among our produce shippers, to the inestimable benefit of the farmers and fruit raisers. The shippers won't cut each other's throats as of yore to secure outside orders. This often made it impossible impos-sible for them to pay the growers living liv-ing prices. The Chamber of Commerce will act as a great, big, leading man to induce in-duce capitalists and manufactories into the city. At present, every business man looks to some one else to take the initiatory steps in al 1 such undertakings. The Chamber of Commerce will dispense news of our resources and natural advantages broadcast over the land and will be an invaluable information bureau to the city. We might mention innumerable other advantages accruing from such an organization. But we halt hero; the organization will soon speak for itself. But every one should disabuse his mind of the erroneous idea that this is to be a self-aggrandizing monopoly. Its functions are just the opposite. It is an organization whose chief object is the good of the town and the people. |
