Show te,,,nSituationJ This has been a great season for .he major livestock shows, such as are held each winter at Los Angeles Kansas City, Chicago, Omaha, Portland, Port-land, Ogden and Denver. Despite the general lowering of livestock values, there has been more interest manifest in good livestock than ever before. In this respect the Los Angeles Christmas Christ-mas Live Stock show, which has just closed, has been of unusual interest inter-est in that the demand of registered breeding stock beef, cattle, swine and sheep has been nothing short of remarkable. Stockmen of the west 'are changing their methods of operation, opera-tion, realizing that the only means of profitable production rests in better breeding and better feeding. " For the first time in the history of the Los Angeles Stock show, an auction auc-tion sale of registered Hereford bulls was held. The top bull sold for $1500 and the average price paid was more tlhan $150 per head, making the Los Angeles sale the highest held at any itock show in the United States this -vinter. This is a very concrete demonstration demon-stration of the demand for better bulls in the western country. It means he creating of a better meat supply! 'or western markets, where there is n insistent demand for better quality .leat foods. I From the standpoint of the sponsors spon-sors of the Los Angeles Christmas Livestock show, the success of the exhibitor-breeders in selling breeding ;tock has assured the future of the Los Angeles exposition. Not only was there a tremendous demand for .the splendid beef breeds, but also a very broad inquiry for pure-bred swine. It begins to look as though the west is at least seriously going into pork production. There is no danger ' of overdoing pork production in the western states for many years to come, as we are still producing only a fraction of the pork consumed by the growing population at Pacific Coast metropolitan centers. The interest taken by producers in building up an improved meat supply means stabilization of the livestock business. There has never been a better bet-ter time to improve breeding herds because prices are relatively low and with better business and industrial conditions, there will be a better de-riand de-riand for quality meats at attractive prices. Those who attended the show must recognize that prosperity is with us. There is no sign whatever of anything any-thing else and to my mind the purchase pur-chase of these great sires and dams and the meat food animals in the fat stock division is unmistakable evidence evi-dence of this fact. Good livestock and prosperity go hand in hand. |
