Show OFFICES FOR EVERYBODY. Jouett Shouse, in charge of the headquarters of the Democratic National Na-tional Committee in Washington, comes out in favor of a five hour day for government employees. This proposal will involve an increase in-crease of one-half in the number of government employees.-It is estimated estimat-ed that one American employee in ten is on the government payroll. Public expenditures now amount to thirteen billion dollars annually, or about one-seventh one-seventh of our national income. The American people must work about one day each week to pay the cost of government. gov-ernment. Public expenditures are increasing in-creasing at the rate of a half billion dollars a year. As a means of relieving the American Am-erican people it is now proposed to increase the number of government employees by half in order that the same work now being done may be accomplished. The people are to be helped by making them work a day and a half each week to pay the cost of government. They are, however, to be permitted to retain the remaining remain-ing time to work for themselves. Would it not be well to put everybody every-body on the public payroll and reduce re-duce the hours to say one a day? This would solve the problem of furnishing fur-nishing work for everybody, the only trouble being that there would be no taxpayers left to pay the freight. Whenever the politicians run out of taxpayers they will be compelled to declare a moratarium. |
