Show WORLD IS NO MAN'S DEBTOR The man who believes the world; owes him a living can never collecti t-. The world owes no one a living. It will yield all that is required for human substance, comfort and happiness, but it has its price and that price must be paid before the delivery of the goods A man adhering to the theory that the world is indebted to the human race and insisting that he was going to collect the living due him in any way he could, was sent to jail in a California, city as a vagrant. The man pays instead of collecting. The public may provide him with temporary shelter and something! to eat, but he pays for it with his liberty and self respect. Doubtless there are deluded persons who don ot believ in individual indi-vidual effort as a necessary factor to human existence. But if their theory held good there would be no progress, no development, and the march of civilization never would have started. It has been said that it is not all of life to live, and if that weres not turej there would be no incentive to achieve. Human energy must be directed direct-ed towards accomplishing greater and greater things as time wears on or our social structure would fall and civilization would stagnate. The world parcels out it bounty according to individual effort, but there must be that effort or the bounty will be withheld. It is a fallacy to assume that something may be had for nothing. The drone pays the highest price and receives the least. S.F. Chroicle. |
