Show Gardens That Produce Results 1 ' Although the ills of the garden are legion, most vegetables survive in spite of these difficulties. However, to produce vegetables of fine quality fungous diseases need to be watched and certain precautions taken. The attack of these diseases is usually much more serious when the plants are small than when they have developed de-veloped to a good size. Most gardeners note that plants showing a vigorous growth, are not, I i damage is done and the fungicide has no value. There are many fungicides, but on garden vegetables the spraying material ma-terial most commonly used is Bordeaux Bor-deaux mixture. This is a kind of whitewash made of stone lime, water slaked under water, and copper sulphate. sul-phate. For a small garden only a small quantity is needed. It may be purchased at almost any seed or garden gar-den supply store. Some gardeners, however, like to make their own and for their benefit bene-fit the following directions are given: giv-en: A common formula is 4 lbs. copper sulphate, 5 lbs. stone lime, water slaked, and . 50 gal. water. This mixture mix-ture would be represented by the; formula 4-'5-50 Bordeaux. Other formulas, for-mulas, such as 5-6-60, 3-4-50, etc., refer to the ingredients in the same order. To make Bordeaux mixture, make a stock solution in which 1 gal. water has dissolved 1 lb. copper sulphate sul-phate and another stock solution in which 1 gal. water has slaked in it 1 lb. stone lime. In making the copper cop-per sulpate stock solution, hang the crystals in a bag in the upper part of the vessel and use a wood or stone container. Be sure that the lime is slaked under water. In making a solution for spraying put in three-fourths of the necessary water first and add the required quantity of copper sulphate stock solution. so-lution. Then pour in the water-slaked lime solution through a strainer and stir. Test by adding a few drops of potassium ferrocyanide solution made by dissolving 10c worth in a pint of waoer.
