Show Helen Wills Respected as American Champion There are no American champions who are more deserving of respect and popularity than Helen Wills of the University of California and the tennis court. There Is an old tennis maxim, "Keep your eyes on the ball and your feet on the ground." Helen Wills does the first when she is playing play-ing tennis, and she does the second all the time. When she is playing she pays no attention to anything but the game. As far as her manner goes she might be playing behind barred gates. Only one remark has ever been publicly pub-licly credited to her about her own playing, and that was that if Vincent Richards (ranking No. 2 man) wanted to play doubles as her partner, he must keep on his own side of the court. She did the rest. Off the court she keeps her feet on the ground in a manner of speaking by keeping her mouth shut. She is an honor student at her university, says the Chicago Evening Journal. America wishes her all success in the coming months as she goes abroad, and especial success in her encounters encoun-ters with the garrulous Suzanne of the flying feet. |
