Show Big Boxing Carnival Thrills Gunnison Sports Boxing and Wrestling are Program Features Feat-ures and Big Crowd Votes for More Exhibitions Main Event Fast One. J Nearly 300 voices proclaimed the athletic carnival held at the high school auditorium last evening, one of the best and cleanest entertain-menlts entertain-menlts of its kind ever staged in this city and when Harold Bradley called for a vote of approval and for more such events, there was not a dissenting dissent-ing vote and it is more than likely that otter carnivals will be staged from time to time. The novelty of the boxing and wrestling matches certainly cer-tainly wasi a "winner" and very attendant at-tendant at the opener were highly satisfied. The .program included two preliminary prelim-inary boxing mathes, the main bout and a wrestling match. The main boxing feature was a boxing contest between Bob Pattillo and Grant Niel-son. Niel-son. The bout was for four rounds and though the contest was about even, Referee Bradley bestowed the honors on Nelson. The opener was a 3-round sparing match between Ronald Bardsley and Seymore Tassie. The battle, however, how-ever, ended in the second, on account of Bardsley suffering from a bad cold, which took his wind. Both of the boys, though inexperienced, gave a good demonstration of their ability and with further training should become be-come very proficient. Tassie was the more clever and had the best of it throughout the fight. The second preliminary, between Clair Tollestrup and Lavor Wilson, proved to be a "hugging" and "slugging" "slug-ging" match. Lack of training in the art of defense was plainly noticeable and the youngsters "hit" and "took" at random. Referee Bradley called the bout a draw. With the opening of the main bout between Pattillo and Nielson, some real bozing was seen. Nielson weighing some .ten pounds more than his opponent, carried an advantage Ithat should have made an easy victory. vic-tory. Pattillo, however, gave Nielson Niel-son a big surprise and the advantage of weight seemed no obstacle for Kid Pattillo. In the first round, which) was tVtrongly in favor of Nielson, Niel-son, Pattillo took some real "kicks" from Nielson's right swings, and in a mix-up Pattillo got a bad wallop in the nose and went down for an 8-count, 8-count, but came up strong when the gong sounded. The second round found both eager for the fray and 'both gave and took several strong blows and clinching was the order, necessitating the activity ac-tivity of Referee Bradley in seperat-ing seperat-ing the antagonists. The round end-ed end-ed with honors even. During the third round, Nielson introduced in-troduced the "hay-maker" and endeavored endeav-ored several times to land his powerful power-ful right, but Pattillo, on his guard, escaped. Pattillo, too, had a nifty swing, and on several occasions Neil-son Neil-son was endangered, only escaping by clinching- or ducking to the floor. Pattillo Pat-tillo was favored as winner of the third. The fourth and last round found Pattillo, notwithstanding the several hard punches he had taken, coming back strong and eager. Both boxers presented each other with some clever clev-er punches and when the gong sounded sound-ed both men were in a clincH.- Referee Ref-eree Bradley announced Nielson the winner at the sound of the gong. Arden Christtensen, weighing 192 pounds, proved the best wrestler, winning win-ning two falls out of three, from El-don El-don Nielson, weighing 150. The wrestling match was one of the interesting in-teresting numbers on the program, but was somewhat one-sided due to the difference in weight of the two men. Nielson looked a winner noU withstanding the odds against him, by gaining the first fall in three minultes and fifteen seconds, with a arm scissors and further Nelson. In the second fall Christensen honked a toe-hold and got his opponent in three minutes. In the third and last fall Nielson was downed in three minutes, Hie crotch hold and further Nelson being used to effect. Dr. T. M. Aldous and Clinton Lun-deberg Lun-deberg acted as timekeepers for all the numbers on the program. The carnival was given for two purposes, one for creating a fund wirtl.i wheh to purchase equipment for the high school gymnasium, and the other to create more .activity in sports and gymnastic work. |
