Show Diplomacy Is Baseball Umpire's Great Asset Diplomacy is an umpire's greatest asset. Often a common sense handling han-dling of a tough situation will keep the official out of trouble. Philadelphia fan3 are still talking about how Umpire Dick Nallin stopped Catcher Micky Cochrane from making a wild protest that might have resulted in his ejection from the game. Cochrane, after being called out at first on a close play, dashed over to where Umpire Nallin was standing back of the pitcher, intent on making strenuous protest. As be neared the umpire, Nallin reached for his back pocket, took therefrom a package of scrap tobacco and held It out to Cochrane, saying: "If you must do some chewing take a mouthful of this." While the fans couldn't hear Nallin's remark his pantomime pan-tomime didn't go over their heads. Cochrane, wearing' a broad smile, continued on his way to the bench without saying a word, while the fans roared. |
