Show Defence Funds Are Increased Washington President Coolidge asked congress for an additional appropriation ap-propriation of $2,942,542 for various naval activities, including $1,005,000 for the marine corps to meet expenses entailed by the marine mail guard, and to maintain the corps at its full enlisted en-listed strength of 18,000 men for the remainder of the present fiscal year. Other allotments would include: Continuing Con-tinuing construction of submarine S-48, $540,000 and improvement at Puget Sound, $75,000. Besides approving the house provision for an increase in the size of the standing army to 118,750 men, the senate appropriations committee com-mittee has added $2,295,135 to the annual an-nual war department appropriation, exceeding the budget estimate by $224,856.
