Show Huge Ice Storage Plant ; Being Planned for Valley I J Gunnison Valley, through the great possibilities of developing further j into garden truck and other produco j which requires refrigeration in shipping, ship-ping, will, in all likelihood, either r,c supplied with an artificial ice plar.l j or the building of a large storage-j storage-j ice plant. The matter is being investigated inves-tigated and the needs of such conditions condi-tions have been found imperative through the inconvenience caused during the past few months in send-j send-j ing forth the immense tonnage of cauliflower and cabbage from t' ?. fields west of town. J. B. Marsh' I', superintendent for the Utah Ice :r i Storage company, Salt Lake City, T. IL Gorman, general freight agent for the American RefrigeraH-'-! Transit company, St. Louis, and G. S. Kelch, general agent for the last company, were here Friday of last week looking over the field and making mak-ing close surveys of the need"; and possibilities, with a view to considering consider-ing the building of an artificial ire plant in the valley. Accompanied by prominent local citizens the officials were taken to the rich garden plots along -the river where the cauliflower and cabbage patches have produced more than 150 carloads of the best quality of these articles grown in the western country. The respective representatives of the refrigerating plants were more than surprised at the wonderful showing and had no hesitancy in seeing the needs of an abundance of ice necessary for the shipping of the products. While no definite announcement was made as to the future results, following the visit of the ice making representatives, representa-tives, it was strongly intimated that either a plant would be installed here, or else a mammoth storage plant would be built. In the event of the last proposition, ice would be brought in here from Colton and stored and be in readiness for next year's shipping. During the past harvest season of cauliflower extra expense was entailed en-tailed in icing cars and after the first year's experience of real shipmenls, it has been found necessary to make conditions more favorable for getting get-ting the shipments out on time pro-pei-ly iced. It is currently rumored that, with the development of the largo caul:-flower caul:-flower and cabbage, potatoes ard beets on the west side, that the proposition pro-position of changing the routing of ;he Denver and Rio Grande from a point near the bridge at Christen-burg Christen-burg and coming direct to Gunnison. In the event this plan is carried out. more than likely a branch will be run to Westview, as a huge tonnage wilt be developed through 'the garden truck, beets and other field and stock products. |
