Show Valley Pioneer Crosses Divide Death summoned another of Gunnison Gun-nison Valley pioneers Friday of last week, when William D. Childs answered an-swered the final call. Following a lingering illness, senile debility resulted re-sulted and for many weeks Mr. . Childs had been confined to his home I a very sick man. Due to his serious ' condition death was not unexpected and when he passed away he was re-! re-! lieved of his long sufferings. William Childs was born in Salt Luke City, April 22, 1852. When yet a young man he came to Sanpete county and was numbered among the pioneers here, being very active in opening many of the project settlements set-tlements in the valley. He was also active in the construction of the large reservoirs and materially aided in making the valley bloom ami produce pro-duce crops. Mr. Childs was admired by all who knew him and in the address ad-dress given at the funeral services a high tribute was paid him for his congenial ways. Funeral services were held for Mr. Childs Tuesday afternoon at the meeting house. Bishop Chris. A. Peterson presided and the musical j numbers, given by a selected quartet, quar-tet, made the services solemn and impressive. The selections were ' "Come, Come, Ye Saints," "Will I Receive a Welcome Home," "Beauti-ful "Beauti-ful Isle," and "Shall We Meet Beyond Be-yond the River." Invocation was of-I of-I fcred by J. H. Simonsen, and the I speakers were C. P. Larsen, Chas. i H. Embley, John Larson and A. E. Park. Benediction was given by I Brigham Jensen and following the i remains were taken to the Center- field cemetery for final interment, when Bishop Peterson dedicated the ; grave. A profusion of beautiful floral offerings banked the grave. Mr. Childs is survived by his wife,: Mary Ann Childs. whom he married I November 20, 1870, four daughters, j Mrs. Rosabell Fetterman of Califor-1 nia, Mrs. Florence Higham and Mrs. Zoe Simonsen of Centerfield, and I Mrs. Dorcus Hayward of Provo. and i three sons, Hubert and Darrell Childs : of Centerfield, and Eldon Childs of' Salt Lake. Besides the immediate members of the family four brothers, Edward, Moroni, Lorenzo and Par- , ley Childs of Gunnison, and thirty-; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren are left to mourn the death of William Childs. i |
