Show Highway Safety Is Strongly Urged With a view of making a comprehensive com-prehensive study of the street and highway safety within the' state of Utah, preparatory to having a strong law enacted, cooperation ias been asked of the local Lions club. N. L. Hermansen, former president of the Commercial club, has just received a communication from H. F. Crockett, Crock-ett, secretary of the state, asking that Gunnison send representatives to a conference that is to be held at the capital city Thursday and Friday, Fri-day, February 5th and 6th. At this conference serious consideration of the problem of safety driving and devising means to overcome the difficulties diff-iculties to keep traffic moving with I orders and safety will be the leading issue. Recommendations for necessary legislation or regulatory enactments are to be made at the conference and civic organizations throughout the state are to be sent and aid in the proposed plans which) will (be presented to the legislature for enactment. en-actment. With the increased automobiles on the highways and the congested forms in the cities, action is absolutely abso-lutely necessary. While in the smaller small-er towns the traffic is much lighter, ! there is dire need of strong legis-; legis-; lation for the safety of travelers as well as pedestrians. While Gunnison ' is comparatively smallj, there is need of not only state laws, but there ! is need of regulatory laws and the i strict enforcement of the same. Thus far this city has escaped many J serious accidents, but there is time and if the speed demons are allowed full swing an undertaker is going to have a job some of these days. Enforcement too, of the laws reg-ulating reg-ulating the highways outside of the cities As vitally important. The "road hog" has got to be instructed and perhaps given a fine in order to get him in line with the laws. With .the highway as complete through this county provisions was made for ample room for two vehicles ve-hicles to pass. This cannot be done when a heavy loaded wagon With three horses occupy the center of the iroad. And the very fact that no I regard whatever is made to auto warnings for half of road, or at least sufficient whereby one can pass in safety, is one of the points that should be corrected. It is likely that one or more re-1 piescntatives from the Gunnison I L'ons club will attend the conference1 ! to be held at Salt Lake during the early part of February. j |
