Show Estimable Woman Answers Summons Mrs. Christena Olsen, one of Gunnison's Gun-nison's highly respected and honored citizens died in this city last Monday Mon-day following a, month's illness. About a month ago she was stricken and due to her advanced age she gradually became weaker and death closed her earthly career quietly and peacefully shortly after one o'clock Monody morning. Mrs. Olsen was a native of Sweden Swed-en having been born at Sturnmelbo, April 7, 1S48-. In 1871. she was married mar-ried to Androw Oleson and eight children was bom to the union. Two daughters and three grandsons are the . survivors. While in her native land Mrs. Olson embraced the gospel and in 1880, she and her family emigrated to America, Amer-ica, and came direct to the Gunnison Valley. She had resided here continuously con-tinuously since that time. She was a devoted wife and mother always faithful to her belief in the ospel. She was known and loved for the many kind acts extended during sickness and trials of friends and those in need. Through the adversities ad-versities and trials of the early pioneers Mrs. Olson fought the battles bat-tles and encouraged and helped others to see the pright side of life. In her church work she was always willing to sacrifice for the cause and she served faithfully as a Ward Relief Re-lief society teacher. Impressive funeral services were held for Mrs. Olsen at the Relief society hall Tuesday afternoon, just two years from the date of the funeral services heldi for her, husband Androw Olson. Bishop Joseph A. Lai-sen of the Hamilton ward officiated. offi-ciated. The opening song, "Softly Beams the Sacred Dawning" was given by the choir, land following invocation was offered by Austin Kearns. "Beautiful Zion ' Built Above" was the next choir selection. Patiarch John Larson, for many years a neighbor and close personal friend of the deceased, was, the first speaker. Mr!, parson told of the many slendid qualities and of the exemplary life led by the deceased. Lorene Peterson read a poem, "A Tribute to Mother," written by a daughter, Mrs. August Holyeson and following Ernest Swalberg gave a solo in the Swedish tongue. Nephi Anderson, who was the next speaker related reminiscenses of the early life when Mrs. Olson gave him advice and incouragement in his visits in religious capacities to the home of Mrs. Olson. A. E. Park, stake president, in well chosen words, paid a high tribute to the life and character of the deceased Bishop Larson closed the services by adding words of comfort and consolidation con-solidation to those who were saddened sad-dened by the death. "Cast Thy Bread Upon the Waters' was the closing song. Benediction was offered by Axel Modeen and Earl Pickett deicated the grave. Burial was held at the Gunnison City cemetery and a large following friends gathered there to pay the last farewll. The floral offerings from friends and relatives were beautiful and profuse and spoke the lovo and respect for Mrs. Olson. |
