Show ENCOURAGE SUGAR BEET INDUSTRY As the season of the sugar beet harvest comes on, it must be seen that here is an industry that should be protected and encouraged encour-aged so that it will become a national industry of the first rank. In spite of tremendous odds, it has progressed in the past few years to where the town of Wiley, Colorado, is holding an annual "Sugar Beet Day," and it is estimated that the crop of Nebraska alone this year will be 893,000 tons. It would be an encouraging sign to see America increasing its internal manufacture of one of the most important of commodities. Today we depend far too much on foreign growing and importation. importa-tion. The folly of such a course was demonstrated: at our expense during war-time when the shortage came and the government was forced to limit consumption to a minimum. In the) interest of progress pro-gress and safety we should encourage sugar beet growers and manufacturers man-ufacturers in every possible way, until the production makes another an-other catastrophe impossible. o |
