Show WHY HAMPER BANKING SYSTEM? i Is the national government becoming paternalistic in its attitude toward savings? 1 The committee on savins' of the American Bankers' association asso-ciation has declared that it is and has gone to the trouble of making public some very pointed resolutions on the subject. The committee takes issue with the government policy in the following report : "While ostensibly co-operating with banks, public officials and employes in the postoffice department, generally work in competition with chartered institutions and are preparing the ground for the establishment of a government savings institution institu-tion with thousands of branches or agencies to withdraw from community development money produced by a community's thrift. , "In addition to withdrawing savings deposits from tb community of origin, the postal authorities seek to add features which, are not only competitive, but subsidized by tax exemption. exemp-tion. .-. "The treasury department continues to use many of its wartime arguments for selling its savings securities, the result being costly to the taxpayer and ridiculous as to effect when measured either by the amount of sales or to the extent to which thrift is promoted." |
