Show ' Madsen Named Nightwatchman At the adjourned regular meeting I of the city council last Saturday evening eve-ning the matter of giving the merchants merch-ants and others more police protec- tion during the wave of crime that is sweeping the country, extra police ; protection was provided and Miles Madsen was appointed special night-I night-I watchman. Officer Madsen started on his beat Sunday evening. A petition signed by fifteen of the I merchants and business men of the city was presented to the council for consideration and immediate action was taken in the appointment of Mr. Madsen. The new nightwatchman will serve from the time of his appointment ap-pointment until the first of May next year, provided there is a decrease in the depredations. Otherwise the office of-fice will continue until there is a cessation in crime. The action of the members of the council in placing the nightwatchman nightwatch-man on at this time is for the reason that several big burglaries have been committed, notably the robbing of the J. C. Penney store here, the robbing rob-bing of several other stores in the northern party of the county and the burglarizing of the Bank of Ephraim which is still fresh in the minds of the citizens. Not alone has Sanpete county suffered but there have been several thefts in Sevier county and the city papers daily report big robberies rob-beries throughout the east and west. Mr. Madsen, who has assumed charge of the protection of the business busi-ness interests during the night, asked that all the citizens co-operate with him. It will be his duty to arrest all suspicious persons who cannot give a logical account of their prowl, ings. And, too, when given orders t,o stop or throw up your hands, comply com-ply with the request, otherwise serious ser-ious results may follow. The burden of maintaining the officer of-ficer for the next six months will fall principally on the merchants. Liberal Liber-al subscriptions have been made and with the $25 that is to be paid month-I month-I ly by the city Mr. Madsen will re-j re-j ceive about $75 or $80 a month 'for i his services. - |
