Every , morning when tho reporter gets up he sees a slender girl sewing by the workroom work-room window. Often when he comes home at night she is still there and still sewing. She is making eyelets in shirt fronts. It is nice and delicate work, though she does it with tho iersistcncy of a machine. She takes thirty stitches every minute. That is 1,800 every hour, or 18,000 every day. In a week she takes 108.000 stitches. Her hand moves a yard for every stitch. In a week she measures off precisely bix miles and a quarter of space with that hand. The pay for this prodigious amount of effective effec-tive labor is $1 a day, and she is considered con-sidered a high priced, skilled workwoman. work-woman. Philadelphia Press, |
