Show Barnstable's Old Bell. In the courthouse at Barnstable, Mass., Is an old bell, cracked and silent, which may be, and probably is. the oldest bell in the United States. So thinks Mr. Alfred Crocker, clerk of courts of Barnstable county. The date 1G75 is still plainly visible in the photograph pho-tograph recently printed In the Bos-ten Bos-ten Evening Transcript. By this date, however, the old bell had seen nearly a quarter of a century cen-tury of life In England before it came to America and began calling worshipers wor-shipers together In the church at Sandwich town. Gratitude bought the hell in England, for it came as a gift from Mrs. Peter Adolph, whose husband. hus-band. Captain Adolph, was lost in the wreck of bis vessel on the Massachusetts Massachu-setts const in 1007 despite t lie efforts of the people of Sandwich. |
