CV, June IS. Ernest Bamberger, Republican National Committeeman Com-mitteeman from Utah, wjis 'tendered the First Assistant Secretary of the Treasury by the Secretary f,f the Treasury Mellon today. Mr. Bamberger Bamberg-er refused the post on the ground that his business interest in Utah would not permit 'him to remove from Salt Lake at this time. Former Governor, Heber M. Wells, was tendered the post offered to Mr. Bamberger and it is understood that he will accept it. The First Assistant Secretaryship of the Treasury was tendered to Mit Bamberger through the efforts of Senator Sen-ator Reed Smoot of Utah, and the members of the Republican National Committee, whicti thus been in session here during the week. Senator Smoot recommended Mr. Bamberger for the place because of his knowledge of National Na-tional financial matters. At the meeting of the Republican National committee held at the AVtil-la AVtil-la il Hotel Mr. Bamberger led the fight to increase the number of. dele-',-ates from Utah frm eight .to ten. At the same time the representation from . the Southern States was cut down 27 votes. It was rumored Hiat Post Master General Hays, former Chairman of the Republican National Committee, offered to Mr. Bamberger the position created by the Postmaster General lust week to head the postal savings, division of the Post office department. It is not. expected that Mr. Bamberger will accept the place tendered hira by Postmaster General Hayes . He wVl leave for Salt Lake this week. |
