Show Now the Public Is to Have a Lobby I ANEW organization that is to help congress serve the interests of the general public has been formed. It is called the People's Legislative Service, and its national council is composed of 70 senators, representatives, representa-tives, judges, editors and others. The organization will attempt to give the general public also designated designat-ed as the ordinary citizen and the ultimate ul-timate consumer the same advantages advan-tages before congress that business, labor, farmers and other groups have. These groups are organized and have lobbies to present their arguments forcefully before congressional committees. com-mittees. Almost any information needed by them can be obtained instantly in-stantly from thQir headquarters. The new group of men and women that aim to serve the iv?ople's interests inter-ests claim that they are not starting a lol by. The institution is somewhat like a lobby in that it is a source of information for congress. But unlike a lobby it represents no limited part of the population, but the public as a whole. It is for the benefit of any congressman con-gressman who wants information on the public's side and it is maintained by subscriptions of members. The national council of the people's legislative service is made up of men and women in all parts of the country who are interested in the public welfare, wel-fare, as well as in that of some particular par-ticular group. Thus, there are in the council the president of the Brotherhood Brother-hood of Boilermakers and Iron Ship Builders, the president of the Farmers' Farm-ers' National council, the general secretary sec-retary of the National Consumers' league, the president of the Alabama State Federation of Labor, the president presi-dent of the Order of Railway Telegraphers, Teleg-raphers, and many others representing important groups. These people are not in the council primarily as labor or farm representatives, however, but as members of the public. |
