Show UTAH'S HEALTH Utah has occasion to be proud of her industrial achievements achieve-ments in many lines. Her educational leadership is an achievement achieve-ment of incomparable value. But greater than all of these is her latest aehievemenl in the preservation of the health of her people. Eastern journals have in some instances been tree to admil thai Utah has done that which seemed to be impossible, namely run a high birth rate and large families and a low death rate in btfcb infant and adult life. It has befen almost the universal uni-versal verdict that these two are impossible of achievement together. to-gether. W hile the state has many resources, man is a greatest of all. Man's conservation from birth to demise is the highest duty of society. In this and in previous issues of 'I he News there lias appeared ap-peared a notice addressed to the Stake and Ward authorities by the first Presidency of the Church advising them to observe Sunday next, the 20th i list., as a day upon which special attention atten-tion shall he paid to the Christmas Seal Sale which is now being CQftduot6d by the Utah Public Health Association. The campaign cam-paign for selling Christmas Seals will run through a period of one month, commencing Thanksgiving Day. It is urged by the First Presidency that the officers and members of the Church be liberal in their patronage of this most worthy cause. It is customary to use Christmas Seals in wrapping packages pack-ages and presents during the holiday season. The Seals furnished fur-nished by the I'uhlic Health Association are very prettily printed print-ed in Christmas colors and are quite as attractive as those which sell at a higher price in the stores. The proceeds derived from the sale of these Seals will be spent in fighting the dread disease, tuberculosis. Very little of the proceeds from the campaign go outside of the state, as over 95 per cent of the money so obtained is spent in a strenuous battle to banish that disease from among us. The Utah Public Health Association through the aid of the government and other affiliated iristi-lutions, iristi-lutions, is spending large sums of money within the state in fighting disease of every form. A traveling clinic, well equipped equip-ped with skilled surgeons and competent nurses, is now traveling travel-ing to the remotest parts of the state Avhere medical and surgical sur-gical aid is not easily obtainable. Two dental clinics are included in-cluded in this organization. For a nominal fee the children's teeth are looked after in many villages 'and settlements where no regular dentists are located. Children are also examined by these physicians who discover defects. Under nourishment is more or less prevalent, but can be successfully combated by proper treatment. The News appeals to its readers to aid this great movement move-ment which means so much to the health and happiness and prosperity of the commonwealth. A little thoughtfulness upon the part of the average citizen will direct the expenditure of small sums of money which will be big results. The preservation preserva-tion of life and the promotion of health are all important. The Christmas Seal Sale and the cause of the Utah Public Health Association are most earnestly commended to the good people of the state Deseret News. |
