Show BOYS PLAYED WITH EXPLOSIVES Teacher and Seven Pupils Are Dead as Result. Lawrenceville, 111. Eight persons are dead and another probably fatally injured as the result of the explosion of a can of nitroglycerin at the Crossroads Cross-roads school, two miles west of here, shortly' after noon Monday. Crossroads Is a two-room country school and a small stream runs through the grounds. At the morning recess some boys saw a can lodged against the bank of the strenm and , began throwing stones at it. At the noon intermission in-termission one of the boys fished the can ont of the water with a stick and threw it across the ditch to his companions. com-panions. They were attempting to open it when it exploded. The boys were blown from ten to twenty feet by the explosion. The teacher was coming com-ing out of the schoolhouse when the explosion occured and was killed. The bodies of the victims were crushed and mangled almost beyond recognition. |
