Show Would Make Gunnison Veteran Headquarters i j If the movement on foot by many of the Indian war veterans who fought in the battles of lHfio-07 materializes, ma-terializes, and there, is every reason to believe they will, then Gunnison will be the headquarters for a National Na-tional Chapter of the veterans who waged war against the Black Hawk Indians. Strong petitions have been sent to the National headquarters at Wichita, Kan., the state has been asked to cooperate in the movement and the citizens of this city are backing back-ing the proposition to the fullest extent. ex-tent. Many of the old veterans who are wintering at the Soldier's home at tiawtelle, Calif., have signed a petition, peti-tion, addressing it to the comrades, the Indian war veterans of Utah. Those who signed are James P. Fjeld-sted Fjeld-sted and Michael Jensen of Gunnison; Peter Gottfredson and John S. Adams of Richfield; Henry McKenna, Redmond; Red-mond; Hyrum Chapman and Joseph Smith, Manti; Hyrum Cluff and Adam Ad-am Brown, Provo; Robt. Cobley,! Pleasant Grove; J. W. Sylvester, St. j George. The position is as follows: Believing that the Indian War Veterans Vet-erans of the Nation are not receiving receiv-ing full justice from our Government, Govern-ment, compared with that allowed to veterans of other wars, considering age, disability, kind of service ren-j .dered and results. We plead with you that you join with all, other In-' I dian War Veterans in a national capacity cap-acity to ask our law-makers to extend ex-tend to the Indian War Veterans of our Nation a more equal recognition and compensation for their services in dedeeming and making possible the building up this great western portion por-tion of this American continent. And to this end we your comrades ask that j you. Indian war veterans of Utah, form a chapter of the national or- ganization, and lend your aid and support in obtaining full and equal recognition with these of other wars. We will assist you in obtaining necessary nec-essary information and insrtuctions in regard to organizing. ' Owing to age of the officers of the ; state organization of the Indian war J veterans of Utah, we would suggest j that the National chapter be independent inde-pendent of the state organization, j and that headquarters be in Sanpete . or Sevier County more centrally of . where the Black Hawk war raged, from 18G5 to 1807, or 1872 when final j peace was declared, j We, Indian war veterans of Utah at the Soldiers Home in California suggest, that Gunnison, in Sanpete County, be made headquarters, and I that Comrade Henry Kearns of Gui-nison Gui-nison be made Commander of the Utah Chapter of the National (. :-ganization :-ganization of Indian Wrar Veterans, and that in obtaining more equal and juht recognition for the Veterans of Indian wars. |
