Show OWSLEY HAS GOOD MEMORY Commander Recognizes Member of His Camp When They Meet In an Illinois City. Distance means little to the American Ameri-can Legion or its officers. National Commander Alvln Owsley recently surprised Legionnaires In an Illinois town, and caused a post commander com-mander a mild embarrassment by his immediate recognition of a former "buddy" In service at an Oklahoma camp, hundreds of miles away from that town. Commander Owsley was being entertained enter-tained at a meeting of the Jefferson post 141, lit. Vernon, 111., and the post commander was introducing the various vari-ous members of his organization to the guest of honor. Momentarily forgetting a member's name, the local man said, "The next is er " "Hello, Balrd," said Commander Owsley, Ows-ley, "what In the world are you doing here?" Balrd was a soldier who had been stationed at the camp when the leader of the Legion was a captain at the post, but he recognized the man before be-fore the post commander could think of the member's name. |
