Show Centerfield Celebration A Crowning Success Special Correspondence Centerfield and Axtell joined forces forc-es Thursday of last week and did honor and homage to the soldier boys who so eagerly and faithfully served our country's cause and the whole day of nearly twenty-four hours was a constant source of delight de-light and entertainment. Lieutenant Jesse Bardsley, in charge of the soldier boys' drills filled his part and the boys are to be congratulated for their exhibition in the several drills, especially the ceremony cere-mony at the cemetery, in honor of the hero, Oliver Jensen, who died in the service of Uncle Sam The committee, composed of members mem-bers from Axtell and Centerfield, who worked faithfully for the success suc-cess of the celebration, are deserving deserv-ing of much credit. The banquet was one of the main features of the celebration and over thirteen hundred hun-dred meals were served during the day. The hand of the artist was manifest on all sides and the decorations decora-tions all about were befitting for the occasion, being of the National colors, col-ors, flags and bunting being profusely profuse-ly used. A splendid feature of the I day's festivities was the band of 28 j pieces from Fairview. Patriotic , music was rendered and the visitors ' were warmly received by continued t applause. Chris. A. Peterson acted as master of ceremonies. C. N. Lund of Mt. Pleasant delivered an elegant, oration and was roundly applauded. The lengthy program was given at the Opera House, the throngs gathered at the cemetery where re spects were paid to the life which was claimed while in " the service. Following this ceremony the meeting meet-ing house was thrown open for the "big feed." Six large tables, each with a seating capacity of nearly fifty, nicely decorated and ladened with oceans of the very best edibles and dainties, and attended by scores of competent waiters, was soon filled with soldier boys, their wives or sweethearts and parents and many others. For hours the feasters made merry and enjoyed the hospitality ixtended by the committees. During the afternoon a program of sports was givjm on Main street and at the City Park the soldier boys gave several interesting drills. Mayfield and Centerfield played a game of ball, the visitors carrying off the honors by winning with a score of 7 to 3. A grand ball in the evening concluded one of the besr. celebrations ever held in Centerfield. The good soaking rain of last Sunday Sun-day afternoon was very much appreciated appre-ciated and all crops are growing nicely now. The weevil has been driven from practically all of the fields and as a result of spring-tooth harrowing and brushing and a big second crop is now assured. Fred Fjeldsted of Gunnison and E. D. Sorenson of Manti, both members mem-bers of the Stake Sunday school i board, visited the Sabbath school last Sunday, and remained for the afternoon service. Both visitors gave interesting addresses on caring fcr the young and of entertaining salvation sal-vation in the soul. Elder Fjeldsted rendeder a solo, "I Know My Redeemer Re-deemer Lives." . |
