Show BEST BLACKBERRIES : GROWN IN -DELAWARE Reason Is Because Farmers There. Have Spent Entire. Lives in Culture of Fruit, Some of the hest blackberries in the world are grown in the extreme southern south-ern part of Delaware. It may be asked : "Why do they rank among the best in the world?"' It Is. because some farmers there have sr'iit their I entire lives and practically all their farms in the cultur of blackberries. The following are the methods employed, em-ployed, by one of the most prosperous blackberry growers in Delaware: He. always selects sandy loam soil, sheltered, shel-tered, from winds. It is essential that this land be -well drained. of'ground. He-keeps weeds down from arwund the blackberry bushes aod the ground soft,, being careful not to in-; in-; Jure the dw shoots. The f OS-lowing ! years witii the . corning of; warm,, springlike weather, he cultivsttes the patch, ani continues to do s, until the berries ripen. When, the berries have gone he applies ap-plies manure to the soil, spreadiag a good-sized forkfal over each hill. Otice each year for about sc-ven yeurs he repeat's this method of immuring. The second year tbe bushes make a large growth. When they attain a height of 2 & feet or 3 feet, he breaks the ti ends off, which cuuses the bushes t be stocky. In autymn he bends the ends ot the topn'ost canes down so as to touch the gi-ouudi cove-rim; them with enough dirt to nold tho-m. in this position. The effect of this is twofold, prevention of winterkilling and creation of new plants. In the spring as soon as the land can be worked, he set out plants about 12 to 14 inches high. His favorite variety va-riety Is tbe Lucrttia. He makes the rows about 6 or 7 feet apart. He leaves about 3 feet between plants In the row. The plants are set in shallow holes, the planter packing the Clrt firmly around the roots. In doing do-ing so he sees that the roots are moist. He claims the advantage in the roots being wet is that the soil is made to hold firmer, thus enabling the roots to take hold in the ground sooner than otherwise. I The first year he plants peas between be-tween rows so as to allow no waste |
