Show Land Assessments Greatly Reduced Notwithstanding the fact that Sanpete San-pete county officials failed to get due notice of the meeting of the state board of equalization on the 15th of July to protest against the proposed increased land assessment in Sanpete San-pete county. of 30 per cent, the move was frustrated by a later meeting when the delegation from the county met with the state board on the 20th of last month. The letter of notification notifi-cation was duly mailed to Manti, but was addressed to a former county clerk, who has since moved to Moroni. Mo-roni. The letter was forwarded to Moroni and it was several days before be-fore it was returned to Manti, hence the delay in gett:ng the hearing. When the delegation from Sanpete county, comprising Parley Christiansen, Christian-sen, county commissioner; J. Fox, assessor; F. R. Lamb, clerk; A. Aid-rich, Aid-rich, Peter Deering, David Beal and John Kelly, appeared before the stats board and entered a protest against the proposed raise, a hearing was given and at the conclusion it was decided to increase the land levy 10 per cent in the couunty, instead of 30 per cent, as was first proposed. It was pointed out that Sanpete county, with the exception of t';e Gunnison district, where there is plenty of water, had been hard hit by the drouth, and the fact that grasshoppers grasshop-pers are devastating parts of the county, had strong bearing on having the proposed raise in the assessment reduced. It was shown at the meeting that fully 75 per cent of the merchants of the county had produced their invoices in-voices to the assessor at the time the assessment roll was made levying 8 5 per cent assessment. Those who did not -produce the invoices will be required re-quired to do so by the board of county coun-ty commissioners, which will sit as a board of equalization. Failure to produce the inven'.ories will require the statements made by the merchants mer-chants to the federal income tax collectors. col-lectors. . |
