Show STATE MAKES BIG SHOWING The spirit of thrift seems to have struck the people of Utah if the rapid rap-id increase in savings deposits in the banks of the state may be taken as an indication. From reliable information, savings accounts in State Banks of Utah have increased thirty per cent in the p:i't year. As a general indication of this fact, the following figures, as compiled by the state bank commissioner, commis-sioner, are given, applying to Davis county. X'tah: Savings Deposits, inn; $i,S42.S2S.6S 1517 2,319,124.41 191S 2,442,992.72 First quarter of 1919 71fi.463.55 This is for but one county, and statistics as to all the counties are now being gathered, but there is every indication that the showing made by this one county is only a fair average of every county in the state. There Is no question but this remarkable re-markable showing is due in a great measure to the W.S.S. and Thrift Stamps campaign that the government govern-ment has put over in the past year and is now conducting. While tha effort is made especially to save by buying W.S.S. and Thrift Stamps, yet it reflects directly on the whole subject sub-ject of saving, and the banks havo increased their savings accounts also. Tin's country has been known as a "waste" county, but with the teaching teach-ing of thrift in our public schools, and the work of the newspapers of the country in spreading the gospel of thrift, we are fast losing the nania "waster." We hope very soon to publish statistics sta-tistics showing the general increase in savings for the entire slate. |
